College of Performing Arts

Course Number

Department(s)

Description

This course will explore the correlation between our perception of two dimensional images and the three dimensional space of the theatre. It will examine the foundations of two dimensional design and how visual artists utilize various techniques to manipulate story and emotional experience in their work. These techniques will then be transferred to staged studio work by exploring elements such as focus and spatial relationships. No papers will be expected in the course but students will have an in depth research period in two dimensional design, including principles of photographic composition and visual manipulation before applying this knowledge into individual studio work. Through this exploration, students will have a better understanding of the impact of the visual aspects of theater and how the slightest visual change can alter the entire experience. Work advanced in this course will advance Directors’ understanding of the connection between artistic expressions and forms and provide them with new staging and compositional techniques to utilize in their future work.
