Prohibition of On-Campus Credit Card Marketing to Students

Introduction

The New School (“University”) policy on the Prohibition of On-Campus Credit Card Marketing to Students (“Policy”) bars the marketing of credit cards to the student body on University grounds and/or with University property.

Purpose

Pursuant to Article 129-A of the New York State Education Law § 6437 (Prohibition on the marketing of credit cards), the advertising, marketing, or merchandising of credit cards to students by vendors is prohibited on university property, except those published in newspapers, magazines, or similar publications, or in accordance with the following guidelines detailed in this policy.

Scope

This policy applies to all employees and students of The New School, as well as outside entities who promote their products on University property.

Responsibilities

Office of Finance & Business: Responsible for communicating policy to outside vendors, business partnerships and other outside entities.

Student Leadership, Involvement and Transition Experience: Will serve as support for students, parents/families and colleagues navigating the policy.

Policy

Promoting or advertising credit cards to students is prohibited on University grounds. This prohibition includes setting up credit card promotional booths on campus, as well as displaying or distributing applications, flyers, posters, handbills, and signs (both electronic and physical) within University facilities. Additionally, the University's email system and web pages may not be used for credit card advertising directed at students.

Banks, credit unions, and approved businesses participating in student orientations, school opening weeks, or campus events are prohibited from distributing credit card applications to students during these occasions. Furthermore, no University employee, student group, or department is permitted to receive financial support or other benefits from credit card companies or vendors in exchange for promoting credit cards to students.
