Course Title
Design Studio 5
Course Description
Architectural Design Studio 5 challenges students to work at the scale of New York City. A choice of projects will be offered that explore either large-scale vertical or horizontal urban projects, on complex city sites with a range of program uses. Projects may involve outside partners and projects are critiqued both inside and outside the University. The studio provides an opportunity to work at a scale that is greater than a single building and yet small enough that finer grained investigations of form and material assemblage can be incorporated. The challenge is to innovate as a process rather than as a product and challenge students to think about how we will build our buildings and cities in the coming decades. What should buildings of the 21st century look like, how should they perform, what are its responsibilities to the city, as a model for new ways of living? The evolution of the design during the early stages will entail an ongoing exchange between programmatic and spatial opportunities until they are optimally joined. Students will be exposed to experts in multiple fields including construction and engineering, and must incorporate critical elements of the NYC Building code and explore zoning constraints. A high degree of project closure and advanced presentation is expected. Students sharpen prior learning employing design process in iterative, active, and analytical ways utilizing schematic and design development, testing, and comparative research.
Open to: Bachelors degree in Architectural Design majors, seniors only; others by permission of the Architectural Design program. Pre-requisite(s): PUAD 3010 Design Studio 3.
