ESL1650 Communication Skills

Course Description

ESL 1650 is designed to help you become a more confident speaker and a more accurate listener of academic English. We will explore a variety of genres, including academic lectures, documentary films, video and audio clips, as well as print and online articles in order to develop fluency and understanding of cultural contexts. Speaking activities will include individual and group presentations, interviews, dialogs, formal debates, and role-plays, as well as highly participatory classroom discussions in which you use new vocabulary, idioms and appropriate language for a variety of speech acts. Listening activities will include listening to academic lectures and audio and texts for structure, content, and mood, and improving basic note-taking skills. You will also listen to and critique your classmates' presentations.
Open to: Parsons undergraduate and AAS degree students who have tested into NELP 1600 & 1650 on the placement exam. Co-requisite: NELP 1600, ESL1600 Intermediate.
