Audio Mixing & Mastering

Course Description

This course explores the theory and practice of mixing and mastering in contemporary audio production, from basic elements of mixing (including equalization, compression, reverberation, modulation, panning, and saturation) to the philosophy, concepts, and techniques of mastering, the final stage of the process. Students will analyze mixes by engineers such as Greg Wells (Adele, Katy Perry, One Republic), MixedbyAli (Drake, Kendrik Lamar), Manny Marroquin (Kanye West, Bruno Mars, Alicia Keys), Paul Epworth (Adele, Coldplay, Florence and the Machine), David Kahne (Lana del Rey, The Strokes), David Wrench (The xx, FKA Twigs), and Tom Elmhirst (London Grammar, Lorde, Amy Winehouse, David Bowie), and students will be able to improve their mixing skills and mastering techniques by working on their own songs and projects. The course includes weekly readings, listening assignments, and discussion responses in addition to creative work. Students will use Pro Tools on their personal computers or campus workstations. Previously offered as LMUS 2150 Studio Topics. Prerequisite: LMUS 2053 Sound and Technology or permission of the Lang Contemporary Music program director.
