Course Description

Over the past 25 years, creative nonfiction has thrived in the borderlands of other genres—particularly fiction, poetry, drama and the graphic novel—while remaining committed to engagement with the real world. In this class we will explore how contemporary nonfiction authors have mined these genres, giving rise to new hybrid forms—in particular, we'll examine how they've used the tools of journalism to tell personal stories. In writing exercises and assignments, students will compose their own personal narratives, drawing on techniques across the spectrum of creative writing. Students will read Susan Sontag, Langston Hughes, Eileen Myles, Audre Lorde, Pat Parker, Ocean Vuong, Mary Karr, Alexander Chee, Juliana Huxtable, Mira Jacob, Toni Morrison, and others.
