Libraries, Collections, and Academic Services

The New School Libraries

The New School Libraries consist of three separate locations, which provide resources and services for the entire New School community. The spaces offer a variety of seating options, including bookable collaboration rooms and quiet study areas; computer workstations and printing, scanning and copying services; and on-site collections of highly-used materials. See Hours & Locations for more details.

The Libraries’ website with our ‘Books & More’ search tool is the best way to discover and request content of all types. The collection consists of both digital and physical formats. These items include books and journals, scores, photographs and images, and audio-visual materials. Electronic resources, such as our databases, are available to enrolled students 24/7.

Many services, like our research guides, video tutorials, FAQs, and electronic Course Reserves are available anytime.

Virtual services also include chat and text messaging research assistance [Ask Us] with your subject librarian liaisons. One-on-one research consultations may be scheduled for online or in-person.

As members of a consortium with NYU, Cooper Union and PALCI, most New School patrons also have access to materials from our partner libraries.

The New School Archives and Special Collections

The Archives and Special Collections (ASC) is open to all researchers interested in discovering history through primary sources.

The Archives and Special Collections include a rich array of artists’ books and other special collections, and archival materials documenting the histories of all divisions of The New School, including work created by its extended community. The ASC also holds materials not directly connected to New School history that  cover a wide range of formats and subjects, representing the work of designers, musicians, scholars, and more. Particular strengths include twentieth century fashion, interior, and graphic design practices.

The ASC provides academic support to New School students at all levels from pre-college to graduate programs, offering orientations, class instruction, and one-on-one consultations. The ASC collaborates with faculty to tailor class visits to learning objectives, creating assignments that incorporate archival and special collections resources. The ASC also hosts one-on-one and group workshops for faculty and administrators who desire an introduction or refresher on conducting archival research, as well as departmental and university history.

In addition to accommodating research on site, the ASC offers a robust slate of remote services that include synchronous and asynchronous online orientations, in-class instruction, and one-on-one consultations via Zoom. The ASC’s Digital Collections lend themselves to remote learning and research. The Histories of The New School website provides short articles contributed by students, faculty, alumni, and staff.

University Learning Center

The University Learning Center (ULC) provides academic support to New School students in the following areas: general and graduate writing, software, computer programming, ESL services, math and economics, oral presentations, time management and ADHD coaching. Students are served through one-on-one tutoring sessions by trained and experienced tutors.

Sessions are highly interactive, with tutors providing constructive feedback and guidance on a wide range of projects and at any stage in the process. Common focus points include helping students to clarify and strengthen their ideas; improve organization, style, and flow; evaluate outside sources and citations; and ultimately, to help students build new strategies and strengthen their skills.

Students can schedule appointments via WCONLINE and they may also try for a “walk-in” session by emailing learningcenter@newschool.edu prior to or up to 15 minutes past a given hour. The ULC also offers weekly sessions for students looking to make steady progress by working with the same tutor at the same time every week or biweekly.
